Xochicalco

28 miles south of Cuernavaca lies the ancient city of Xochicalco, which covers an area, taking up more than 600 acres of the hillsides. By at least 200 BC, construction of the temples began and later Xochicalco became one of the first known sites to become a fortress. It was the most important ceremonial center of the Tlahuicas and it means "House of Flowers", it is located on a hill where the hand carved city of Xochicalco is found.

There are many interesting things to see, such as figures and hieroglyphs carved on its Feather Snake (Quetzalcoatl) pyramid, the excellent arrangement of its two glyph stele square, and its well preserved three ball courts. Furthermore, it's worth it paying a visit to the observatory with an underground chamber where only during the summer solstice (June 22nd) the sunlight penetrates through an opening in the roof to completely illuminate the chamber's interior.

How to get there from Cuernavaca:
- Autobus Estrella Roja
- Entrance : U$4.00 / EUR 4.20 CHF 6.00
