One of the first preoccupations of the Spanish was to replace pagan temples with Christian churches. A classic case is the great Pyramid of Cholula, now topped by a small colonial church. Many of the fine mansions, churches,
monasteries and plazas that today contribute so much to Mexico's beauty were created during the 300 years of Spanish rule. Most were in basically Spanish styles, but with unique local variations.
Colonial
Cities are stunning reflections of Mexico's rich history. Most of them have been carefully preserved or restored, and you can wander around the streets, alleys, plazas and gardens at a leisurely pace,
absorbing their authentic atmosphere, serene culture and colourful heritage.
With wealth founded on the silver mined around them, these cities grew to prosper and reflect the great achievements of their
day. Many were host to significant events throughout Mexico's struggle for Independence. San Miguel de Allende is best known for its cobbled streets and art scene. Guanajuato is one of Mexico's most attractive colonial cities.
Querétaro, besides its silver fame, played major roles throughout Mexico's
Independence Movement, and remain one the of important historical Mexican cities. Although not much silver was ever mined there, Taxco is the place to buy silver in
Mexico today as a lot of silver is bought here to be crafted.
Cuernavaca was a favourite 'getaway' spot going back to Aztec times, and still is with Mexico City dwellers today. Puebla, scene of one of Mexico's most famous battles, is a
stunning colonial gem with huge Spanish and Moorish influence.
Oaxaca
, without doubt the heart and soul of Mexico, is a must-see experience for anybody travelling in the southern regions of Mexico. Morelia is a stunning colonial city,
full of history and culture, with some great towns and villages in the surrounding area.
Pátzcuaro has a handsome core of lovely colonial buildings, churches and fine plazas,
its streets climbing steeply to Our Lady of Good Health in the east of town. San Cristóbal de las Casas, is very famous for its beauty, in particular its Church Santo
Domingo.
