Cuernavaca is the capital of the Morelos state and counts more that one million
inhabitants. It hosts a score of scientific research institutes, an industrial park with over one 100 industries, 17 universities, extensions of the National University in Mexico City,
and a global assortment of retired diplomats, business executives and government officials.
The ancient name of Cuernavaca in the State of Morelos, Mexico is "Cuauhnahuac" in
Nahuatl which means "Place near or by the side of the groove".
For many years, Cuernavaca has been known as a resort where both Mexicans and
foreigners come to enjoy the clean air, relax and enjoy the incomparable climate. The city is filled with gardens, tennis courts and fine hotels offering every commodity. Within a 40

Borda Gardens Opposite the Cathedral. Designed in the 18th century by a wealthy miner, Jose de la
Borda, the gardens were used by Maximilian and Carlota for splendid parties during their reign some 100 years later.
Palace of Cortés
Built in 1530 by Cortes as his personal summer residence, the Palace now houses the Historical Museum of Cuernavaca.
Cuernavaca Cathedral (Franciscan Convent of La Asunción)
Construction started in 1533 under Cortes supervision as a Franciscan monastery. Frescoes uncovered in 1950 depict scenes of missionary activity and the execution of
San Felipe de Jesus- the only canonized Mexican.

Teopanzolco Considered one of the most important temples of the prehispanic culture in the region, this site is comprised of "The Double Temple of Tlaloc-Huitzilopotchtli" which shows how
the ancient inhabitants of Cuauhnáhuac built their worshipping sites over previous structures.
