Pesos

Mexico's currency is the Peso (sometimes referred to as the New Peso (Nuevo Peso), since Mexico re-valued its currency in 1994. There are one hundred Mexican cents (Centavos) to every peso.

A concern, especially over the short term, is the future direction of the peso-dollar exchange rate. Under the present system, which allows the peso to float in accordance with supply and  demand, the peso may become volatile during times of perceived crisis, but it should never suffer a massive devaluation.

The downside of this policy, of  course, is the inability to predict either the short- or long-term value of the currency, making it difficult for a business to quote prices for future  delivery, or make any long-term commitments for imports. If asked, however, most businessmen would prefer this uncertainty to the previously fixed, overvalued  peso that inevitably leads to devaluations. Peso slippage can be planned for,  but devaluation cannot.

Coins and  Notes

Coins
are minted in denominations of 5, 10, 20  and 50 centavo pieces and 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 Pesos.

Notes are printed in denominations of 10, 20,  50, 100, 200 and 500 pesos. The most commonly used are the 50 and 100 Peso  notes.  500 peso notes are almost impossible to spend for small purchases, as  they 'rob' the trader's change.

The 10, 20 & 50 Peso notes are slightly smaller than the 100, 200 and 500 Peso notes, which are all the same  size. Examples of the notes are as follows:

20 Peso Note.  There is a coin, but  these are still quite common.
Rough Value:
EUR 1.950 /  US$2.15 / CHF 2.7.--

50 Peso Note. Very commonly used and seen
Rough Value:
 EUR 4.80/ US$5.00 / CHF 7.--

100 Peso Note. Probably the most common note used today.
Rough Value:
EUR 9.70 / US$10.00 / CHF 14.--

200 Peso Note. Very common - cash  machines dish these out a lot of the time.
Rough Value:
EUR 19.-- / US$20.-- / CHF 27.--

500 Peso Note. Still quite rare, and a pain to get change for.
Rough Value:
EUR 48.-- /  US$50.-- / CHF 70.--
